The Diamond Guide

Everything you need to know about choosing the perfect stone for your ring — and why lab-grown diamonds are the smart choice.

Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — they have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and brilliance as mined diamonds. The only difference is their origin. One comes from the earth over billions of years, the other is created in a controlled lab environment in weeks.

At The Ring Collective, we specialize in lab-grown diamonds and moissanite because we believe you should get the most stunning ring possible without the inflated price tag or ethical concerns of mining.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

  • 40-60% less expensive than mined
  • Chemically identical to natural diamonds
  • Ethically sourced, no mining impact
  • Available in larger sizes for your budget
  • Same hardness (10 on Mohs scale)
  • Certified by GIA, IGI, and other labs

Natural Diamonds

  • Formed over billions of years underground
  • Higher price per carat
  • Environmental impact from mining
  • Supply controlled by few companies
  • Same physical properties as lab-grown
  • Traditionally marketed as "rare"

Understanding the 4 C's

Whether lab-grown or natural, every diamond is graded on four key characteristics. Here's what matters most when choosing your stone.

Cut

The most important factor for sparkle. Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets interact with light. An excellent cut maximizes brilliance — this is where you don't want to compromise. We always recommend prioritizing cut quality above all else.

Color

Diamonds are graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). For most rings, grades G through I offer the best balance — they appear white to the naked eye but cost significantly less than D-F grades. We'll help you find the sweet spot.

Clarity

Clarity measures tiny imperfections called inclusions. Grades VS1 and VS2 are the smart choice — inclusions are invisible without magnification, and you save considerably compared to flawless grades. Your ring will look just as stunning.

Carat

Carat is the diamond's weight, not its size. A well-cut 1.5ct diamond can look larger than a poorly cut 2ct stone. With lab-grown diamonds, your budget stretches further — you can often go a full carat larger for the same price as a natural stone.

Moissanite: The Brilliant Alternative

Moissanite is an incredible option if you want maximum sparkle at a fraction of the cost. It's nearly as hard as diamond (9.25 on the Mohs scale) and actually has more fire and brilliance than a diamond — meaning it throws even more rainbow flashes in the light.

Originally discovered in a meteor crater, moissanite is now lab-created and is one of the most popular choices for engagement rings. It's perfect for those who want a show-stopping stone without the diamond price tag. A 2-carat equivalent moissanite can cost 90% less than a natural diamond of the same size.

Popular Stone Shapes

The shape of your center stone is one of the biggest style decisions you'll make. Each shape has its own personality — from the classic brilliance of a round to the vintage elegance of a cushion cut.
